The most common symptoms of kennel cough include dry coughing, retching, white foam, nasal discharge, and pink eye. This disease as its name implies is most often caused by close contact with infected dogs (in a kennel). There can be any number of different pathogens involved in a single case of this disease. The three most common forms of this disease are caused by the following pathogens: parainfluenza, bordetella, and mycoplasma. Parainfluenza is the most common of the three major causes. Kennel cough treatment is a simple process if it is diagnosed in the early stages of the condition. Once your vet has determined that your dog has this disease he will administer antibiotics to help fight the infection. The most commonly prescribed drugs include Clavamox and Doxycyclines. Curing kennel cough can take anywhere from eight to ten days. If the dog doesn’t receive prompt treatment or if they have a particularly complicated version of the disease the treatment process will take a significantly longer period of time (approximately three weeks) and will require the use of stronger medication. The medications recommended for advanced situations includes Azithromycin and Baytril.
